Chicago Makes History: Mayor Brandon Johnson Meets with Queer Construction Workers in First-of-Its-Kind Roundtable

Punch List Consulting & Visual Designs convenes the first sitting Chicago Mayor to sit down with a group of Queer Tradespeople, Apprenticeship Center Officials, and Workforce leaders to reframe the future of the Construction Industry.

CHICAGO — September 2, 2026 — Punch List Consulting & Visual Designs (PLC), a Chicago-based Construction marketing and communications firm, hosted Mayor Brandon Johnson for a roundtable with Queer Tradespeople, Apprenticeship Center Officials, and Workforce leaders on August 27, 2026 — believed to be the first time in Chicago's history that a sitting Mayor has convened specifically with a group of Queers working in Construction.

While Chicago has previously elected an openly LGBTQ Mayor and hosted LGBTQ+ small-business roundtables through BACP's ChiBizPride program, no prior administration is known to have brought City Hall into direct conversation with Queer workers on the tools — the Contractors and Trades professionals who build the city every day.

"Queer workers in Construction are proud of who we are, and we just want to work — and work hard. It shouldn't matter how the worker next to you identifies, but it does to a lot of the seasoned workers currently in charge of teaching and passing down the knowledge.

You can't complain about a labor shortage and then turn away the labor coming in because it doesn't look like what you're used to. Having a current Mayor sit down with the workers themselves — not with a chamber, not with a panel of executives — is what culturally affirming leadership looks like."

Three Asks on the Table

The roundtable, delivered three concrete policy asks organized around safety, pipeline, and contracting parity:

1. Ban open-air urinal units. Require fully enclosed sanitation.

Require fully enclosed, lockable portable sanitation units — no doorless urinal-only "pissers" — plus gender-neutral restroom access across all City-connected positions, including Construction worksites, CTA drivers, and other City Trade roles with little to no consistent facility access today. Most sanitation codes, including OSHA's 29 CFR 1926.51, technically exempt urinal-only units from full-enclosure requirements — a known, closeable loophole, not a new standard.

2. Give HR and apprenticeship intake a confidential protocol for document mismatches — and require inclusive onboarding.

Require every City-funded Union apprenticeship program and City department to designate a single trained point of contact for reviewing application paperwork — birth certificates, high school diplomas, transcripts — that doesn't match an applicant's current legal name. Right now, that mismatch gets handled by whoever happens to be processing intake, with no privacy rule and no training, which can out a Trans applicant to office staff and the hiring committee before they've even started the job. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel's Gender Transition Policy already provides a working federal model. Pair the intake protocol with mandatory pronoun education and safe-space training at onboarding, so the culture of the jobsite catches up with the paperwork policy.

3. Give LGBTBE real contracting parity with MBE, WBE, and Veteran status.

Upgrade Chicago's 2020 LGBTBE resolution — passed by City Council 47-1 — from acknowledgment-only to real parity with MBE, WBE, and Veteran status, with actual contract-specific goals, aspirational participation goals, and bid incentives under the Municipal Code. New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Boston, and Baltimore have already folded LGBTBE into their supplier-diversity programs with real contract credit.

Why It Matters

Industry estimates suggest only about 2% of Construction workers openly identify as LGBTQ+ — a figure that reflects not the actual size of the community, but the safety and cultural conditions of the jobsite. Basic issues like private sanitation, confidential handling of intake paperwork, inclusive onboarding, and real contracting inclusion for LGBTBE-certified firms are practical, closeable gaps — not abstract policy debates.

"A policy can say someone can't be fired for being Queer. It can't stop coworkers from quietly freezing someone out once they find out," Ebba added.
